Leases in Luxembourg tend to end in summer, exams finish, and suddenly you have a room full of things and nowhere to put them for three months. Maybe you are going home to Lisbon or Warsaw for the break, heading off on an Erasmus semester, or moving between a room in Limpertsberg and a flat in Belval. Student storage solves the gap: somewhere to keep your boxes while you are away, without paying rent on a room you are not using. Here is how it works in Luxembourg, what it costs, and how to do it without a car.
Why student storage is its own kind of problem
Most storage advice assumes a family with furniture and a van. Student storage is different on three counts:
- The stays are short. Usually one to four months, over summer or a semester abroad, so a fixed annual contract is the wrong shape.
- The budget is tight. Paying for a full storage unit, or a second month of rent on a room you are not in, rarely makes sense.
- Most students have no car. That rules out the self-storage units on the edge of town, which expect you to drive your things there yourself.
What it costs, and when it beats keeping your room
Storagelux is €20.00 per box per month, with a one-month minimum and no setup fee. For a typical student, four to eight boxes covers books, kitchen things, bedding, clothes and the bits that do not fit in a suitcase. Eight boxes across the three summer months is €480.00. Set that against holding an empty room in Luxembourg City over summer, which easily runs past €600 a month, and storing is the obvious call if your contract lets you leave. Full box dimensions and pricing are on the Storagelux pricing page.
Store, take home, or let go
Before you book anything, sort what you own into three piles:
- Take home. Your laptop, documents, the clothes you need for the season, and anything valuable enough that you want it with you.
- Store in Luxembourg. Course books and notes you will need next year, kitchen equipment, bedding, winter clothes over summer, and anything that is a hassle to replace.
- Let go. Half-used supplies and second-hand furniture you bought for €15. If a box costs €60 to store over a summer and the contents are worth less, store something else and re-buy in September.
Packing on a student budget
- Books are heavy. Spread them across several boxes rather than filling one to 30 kg. Our boxes take up to 20 kg.
- Label by category, not by room. You packed in one room anyway, so "kitchen", "books" and "winter" are what you will actually search for later.
- Clean the kitchen things first. A pan with oil residue sealed in a box for three months is a bad reunion.
- Use bedding and clothes as padding around anything fragile, and save on bubble wrap.
The no-car part
This is where door-to-door matters most for students. We collect the boxes from your room, whether that is a studio in Belval, a shared flat in Limpertsberg or a residence near the Kirchberg campus. You do not carry anything to a depot, and you do not need to borrow a car or hire a van. When you are back, we deliver to your new address. Pickup slots are Tuesday and Friday mornings, which usually lines up with an end-of-lease clear-out.
Timing it around the academic calendar
Two dates matter: when your lease or residence contract ends, and when you need things back. Book the pickup for the last few days before you leave, once the room is packed but before you hand back the keys. For the return, message us when your new room is confirmed and we schedule delivery. There is no fixed term, so if your plans shift by a few weeks, storage simply continues month to month.
Storing during a semester abroad
An Erasmus or exchange semester is the classic case: four or five months away, a room you cannot afford to keep empty, and no wish to fly your whole life to Bologna and back. Store the bulk in Luxembourg, take a suitcase, and pick up where you left off when you return. It works the same way for summer internships in another city, which are common for students at the University of Luxembourg and the business schools.
